Dr. Who Night

Friday night at our house is Dr. Who Night.

Over the past couple of years, the kids and I have already gone through Tom Baker’s, Peter Davison’s, Colin Baker’s, and Sylvester McCoy’s episodes. After watching the Dr. Who TV Movie with Paul McGann I gave the kids the choice to continue on to the modern series, or go back. They all voted for going back. 🙂

Over the past couple of years, the kids and I have watched Tom Baker‘s, Peter Davison‘s, Colin Baker‘s, and Sylvester McCoy‘s turns as the Doctor. After watching the Dr. Who TV Movie with Paul McGann I gave the kids the choice to continue on to the modern series, or go back. They all voted for going back. 🙂

I tried to encourage them to go back to the very beginning, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton, but they weren’t too keen on black-and-white. As a compromise we settled on the earliest Dr. Who episodes with color. So, for the past two months we’ve been making our way through the Jon Pertwee years.

Tonight’s serial is “The Claws of Axos”. It’s the third serial in a row with the Master, the Doctor’s greatest enemy, portrayed by Roger Delgado.

When I first started Dr. Who Night, I was just sharing my love of the show with my kids. My plan was to show them a few episodes and stop if they didn’t like it. Turns out they do like these 30+ year old television episodes — cheesy special effects, crazy plots, and all. It’s great fun for the whole family, and one of the highlights of our week — we all look forward to it.

Anyway, I’ve got to go now, there’s a very scary blanket crawling across the floor of the lab (you’ll just have to watch the episode to see what I’m talking about).

  1. I think your kids are more knowledgeable in Doctor Who lore than anyone in the BYU Dr. Who Club! 😀
